AT&T Support MMS on the iPhone

September 25 is the date AT&T has announced for the launch of MMS on iPhone 3G and 3GS devices. Adding that capability to an iPhone on the AT&T wireless network (which in the U.S. is like saying a Big Mac at McDonald’s) will be as simple as downloading the latest software update.

The problem some having been griping about, and the reason many are not so easily willing to forgive and forget, is that Apple brought MMS to the iPhone (also far behind the curve for many users and would-be’s) when it released the iPhone 3.0 OS update in June of 2009. But U.S. iPhone users (and those abroad locked into an AT&T wireless contract) haven’t gotten to access that facility yet because, the argument being, AT&T has by all appearances been sitting on its heels on this one.

That’s 3 months of having a feature in your iPhone that you can’t access. Like finding the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow and discovering you need to wait for the leprechaun to show up now and give you the key. So close and yet so far. For many iPhone users, AT&T has become that lolly-gagging little green man. (AT&T, incidentally, claims that the iPhone’s MMS capability is so advanced and its user base so broad, the carrier had to beef up its MMS network architecture to keep up with the imminent MMS traffic.)

But AT&T bashing aside (as that is not the point of this article), multimedia messaging will now be at iPhone users’ fingertips – giving the device’s staunch competitors one less advantage to woo customers away from the siren-like call of everything-Apple.
